 Abstract

Inexact application of fertilizer by itself does not guarantee a steady increase in yields. It can lead to create environmental hazard and health problems. A study was conducted in two consecutive years of 2015 and 2016 during the rainy season (March to June) to assess the effect of inorganic fertilizer, poultry manure (organic fertilizer), and the combination of both fertilizers on the productivity of upland rice in acidic soils of Cameroon. Five treatments: 0N-0P-0K, 16N-8P-8K kgha-1, 24N-12P-12K kgha-1, 32N-16P-16K kgha-1, 40N-20P-20K kgha-1 for inorganic fertilizer, 5 treatments: F0 (0 tha-1), F1 (2.5 tha-1), F2 (5 tha-1), F3 (7.5 tha-1), F4 (10 tha-1) and 6 treatments: C0 (0N-0P-0K kgha-1), C1 (2.5 tha-1), C2 ( 32N-16P-16K kgha-1), C3 (0.625 tha-1 + 24N-12P-12K kgha-1), C4 (1.25 tha-1 + 16N-8P-8K kgha-1), C5 (1.875 tha-1 + 8N-4P-4K kgha-1) for the combination of poultry manure and inorganic fertilizer were applied to NERICA 3 rice variety in a completely randomized block design with 4 replicates. The results revealed that the 32N-16P-16K Kgha-1 dose of inorganic fertilizer, the 2.5 tha-1 dose of poultry manure, and 1.875 tha-1 + 8N-4P-4K Kgha-1 dose of the combination was found to be best compared to control. Significant differences were observed in all treatments for leaf chlorophyll content and plant total biomass. The integration of these doses in soil offers a sustainable and comprehensive strategy for the management of acid soils in the tropics.
